How to declutter your home

So, you’re looking to declutter your home. Perhaps you plan on moving, you’ve been letting your things pile up or all the clutter is just giving you unnecessary amounts of stress. Well, you may be feeling overwhelmed now but decluttering your home isn’t as hard as you think. When it comes to organization, think planning, taking things one step at a time and having an idea of where you want to move the clutter—storage, recycling, donating, selling or trash. Whatever your goal, we have the tips to make decluttering a piece of cake and to give you peace of mind.

  1. Start with a list

It sounds easy enough, right? Write a list of the areas in your home that need to be decluttered and go from the least clutter to the most. You may want to include specifics such as certain drawers that you need to go through, cabinets, the top of the closet, the space in the back of the attic and whichever spaces need your time.

  1. Set a timeline

With a list comes deadlines. These aren’t meant to make your decluttering experience more stressful, rather, they should make matters more organized. Perhaps you want to devote a single weekend to the guest bedroom, including cleaning out the dresser, vacuuming and the rest of the tasks that you’ve set for yourself. Try to make these deadlines realistic, as to not cause disappointment later on.

  1. Take your time

Remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day. You may want to space out your decluttering adventure throughout the next month or few months, depending on how much time you have. With an efficient plan in place, try not to stress over the details and decide when enough is enough and it’s time to move on to the next room. You’re not going for perfection but efficiency and getting the job done.

  1. Involve the whole family

Depending on the number of people in your household, you can surely involve the entire family in this project. Have kids? Assign them roles that they can complete after school and on the weekends. For example, they can separate the items in their room that they want to donate, sell or put into storage.

  1. Decide what you’re going to do with your clutter

When you have your clutter boxed up, bagged and what-have-you, you need to decide the fate of the clutter. You may have certain bags that are going in the trash, which is an easy place to start. Next, you may want to decide what’s going to be recycled and separate out plastics, cardboard, etc. Have items of value that you’d like to sell? Choose a sunny weekend for a garage sale. Lastly, you’re going to have items that are taking up space in your home but that you don’t want to toss away. These are the items that would be perfect for a storage facility. Clutter doesn’t have to take over your life. Tackling this beast is a task that anyone can accomplish with a little time, planning, teamwork and a reliable place to store your items like The Box, where customer service and care is our main priority.
